Research

Professor Newton's research is focused upon the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative instructional and assessment methods in pharmacy education. At present, she is examining the influence of alternative instructional methods on the ability of students to transfer problem solving skills from the classroom setting to actual pharmacy practice.

Professor Newton is also active in the area of curricular change. She has served as a consultant to a number of colleges and schools of pharmacy during the design of their entry-level doctor of pharmacy curricula. In addition, she continues service as a consultant to the American Association of Pharmaceutical Education's Center for the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Education. In that capacity, she originally assisted in the development of a comprehensive set of educational outcomes for entry-level doctor of pharmacy curricula. At present, she is involved in the review and revision of these outcomes to ensure their currency and utility as guides to colleges and schools who are undergoing curricular revisions.

Professor Newton has published many professional and research-oriented publications and has co-authored two book chapters. One of the articles that appeared in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education won the Rufus A. Lyman Award presented annually for the outstanding article published in the journal.
