GOALS

 The goals of this rotation are as follows: 

To give the student the opportunity to become familiar with the process of providing medical information from an industry perspective. 

To provide the student with experience in the pharmaceutical industry 

To strengthen the student’s verbal and written communication skills  

To augment the student’s literature evaluation skills 

To provide the student with experience in providing medical information to various internal groups within the Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America. 

OBJECTIVES 

These goals will be achieved by completing the following objectives: 

Develop a familiarity with various medical information sources 

Complete special projects: (therapeutic talks, self directed projects, 3 major projects) 

Active participation in research, documentation, and customer contact 

Develop an awareness of corporate organization and responsibilities 

OBJECTIVE 1:    Develop a familiarity with various medical information sources

 OBJECTIVE 2:    Complete special projects 

You are being asked to complete several special projects during your rotation.  The intent is to have you create end products that can be utilized by Takeda and potentially its global affiliates.  These projects are intended to enable you to practice information-gathering skills, as well as strengthen your ability to analyze, organize, and condense information from a broad spectrum of resources.  These exercises will also provide you with the opportunity to hone your writing skills while being reviewed by scientists, pharmacists, and physicians.

OBJECTIVE 3:    Active Participation in Manuscript Preparation 

Supporting Activities       

Participate in manuscript preparation 

Become familiar with the process of manuscript approval and acceptance 

Develop an understanding of the impact of scientific data on the market place.

 

OBJECTIVE 4:    Develop an awareness of corporate organization and responsibilities 

Supporting Activities 

Review the corporate information pamphlet and corporate mission statement. 

Meet with associates from other areas of the corporation (e.g. medical, consumer technical services, regulatory affairs, etc.) to develop an appreciation for the wide range of opportunities available in industry. 

Create and provide to your preceptor a brief summary report of your one-on-one meetings. 

Self-Directed Student Assignments 

The student is expected to complete 3 of the following self-directed assignments. 

Briefly describe, in writing, the manuscript preparation and submission process. (Mandatory

Prepare, in writing, your answer to the following statement: “Hyperglycemia makes you sick; hypoglycemia kills.  Provide references. 

Prepare, in writing, your answer to a patient who says to you, “My doctor told me I have a touch of diabetes.” 

Prepare, in writing, a brief description of the Takeda Internal Approval Process for a manuscript. 

Prepare, in writing, a brief description of the Takeda Internal Approval Process for a poster abstract. 

Briefly describe, in writing, the job responsibilities of three of the following persons:

Scientific Communications Associate

Editorial Assistant

Medical Writer

Clinical Research Physician

Marketing Associate

Medical Safety Associate

Regulatory Scientist

Statistician

Clinical Research Administrator

Clinical Process Manager 

Briefly describe, in writing, why you would be qualified for one of the positions in assignment #5 (above).  Include a copy of your up-to-date C.V. 

Describe the steps and tools you might use to encourage a non-compliant teenager to adhere to his/her diet, medication, blood glucose monitoring, and exercise.   

Describe the steps and tools you might use to encourage a patient with type 2 diabetes to comply with her/his diet, medication, blood glucose monitoring, and exercise program.   

TM, a patient with type 1 diabetes has awakened every night at 0200 hrs with a terrible headache, nightmares, and in a cold clammy sweat for the past week.  What questions might you want to ask before you “attack the problem?”
