Retail Pharmacy Management - Walgreens

Preceptor: Mike Wichlinski

Description:
The Indiana District Pharmacy Management rotation of the advanced clerkship program was developed to give student exposure to the various aspects and dynamics of pharmacy management and their relationship to and effects on the dispensing functions in a retail pharmacy environment. the rotation creates an understanding of management philosophy and highlights the skills needed to operate a pharmacy. Each week the student will learn a new aspect of pharmacy management and be expected to build upon and expand it the following week. The rotation should be a
continuous learning program. During the rotation the student will have outside experiences. These outside experiences may include setting up a new or relocated store, helping with a physical inventory, working with the pharmacy supervisor, district manager, district trainer, and district loss prevention specialist, visiting a warehouse facility, spending a day at Walgreens health Initiatives, touring the computer facility, and other learning opportunities
as they occur.

Student Activities:
Week 1: Workflow and Intercom Plus Overview
Week 1 will begin giving the student an understanding of how Intercom Plus/Workflow Management operates.  They will be working at the out window of the pharmacy. This encompasses the cash register, drive-thru, and the phone system. The student will begin viewing the various modules of the Intercom Plus CD-ROM training and integrate this training with their experiences. The trainer should give the student an overview of the workflow process. At the end of the week the student will learn about third party rejects, KPI reports, and pharmacy management reports. They will be given an explanation of what each KPI report gauges and how to correct the
problems that cause the reports to have low scores. The Bag Management Report should be taught on the 15th of the month, whichever day this may be during the program.

Week 2: Workflow, Intercom Plus, KPI Reports, and SIMS
The student will finish their training on Intercom Plus by completing the in-window, filling station, and the technician cases. They will continue their training from week 1 on the various pharmacy reports. The student will look at each day's summary report and make suggestions on how to improve. The student will gain a working knowledge of SIMS based on handouts and the trainer's guidance.

Week 3: SIMS, Operating Statements, Store Management
The student will begin practicing everything they have learned about SIMS and learn about operating statements.  They will post all jobber receipts, interstore transfers received, claims created in the pharmacy, and periodic counts created. They will verify on-hand quantities for all IOU's and adjust on-hand quantities for jobber items received that are Item Not Found. The store manager and pharmacy manager will go over the their most recent operating statements with the student. The student will spend one day with the store manager to gain an understanding of what their job entails. At the end of the week the student will review Intercom Plus and Workflow Management, learn how to do Windsor returns, and order CII drugs.

Week 4: SIMS, Schedule Making/Manpower Utilization
The student will continue to work with and learn SIMS. They will learn how to create schedules using Staffworks.  They will be taught this by the district trainer. The student will create a practice schedule using Staffworks to determine when personnel are needed the most. They will do Windsor reports and participate in ordering CII
drugs.
