Pharmaceutical Industry Rotation Medical Outcomes Specialists (MOS) Team Pfizer, Inc. Preceptor: Heather Sell, PharmD, BCPSScott E. Glosner, Pharm.D, BCPSPractice DescriptionPfizer Inc. is one of the world's largest researchers, manufacturers, and marketers of medical drugs spending more than $5 billion dollars in research yearly. Pfizer's businesses encompass all aspects of the health care field, including expanded roles for pharmacists. The role of a Medical Outcomes Specialists (MOS) with Pfizer is to provide services for the healthcare community in a manner that demonstrates Pfizer's commitment to the delivery of quality, cost-efficient healthcare and education. MOSs assist healthcare provider by actively seeking practical, innovative solutions to help meet the needs and challenges commonly faced today within the healthcare community. The healthcare community consists of managed care organizations, long term care facilities, hospitals, medical groups, retail pharmacies, employers, and community organizations. MOSs provide a variety of services, including Health Outcomes Project and Evaluations (HOPEs) A HOPEs is an evaluation of a disease encompassing limited outcomes measurement for a specific patient population. The MOS also provides pharmacoeconomic support and healthcare education. This rotation is designed for a student who has a working knowledge or practice experience in a hospital or community pharmacy. The student should be self-motivated and able to work without continual supervision. Goals and ObjectivesUpon completion of this rotation, the student shall have accomplished the following objectives: 1. Describe and understand the various opportunities for pharmacists within the pharmaceutical industry. 2. Describe the pharmaceutical industry's relationship to the patient, healthcare professionals, various professional organizations, and managed care organizations. 3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of outcomes and pharmacoeconomic principles to complete a project.

Present a well
prepared educational topic to an audience to be determined. Rotation DayA rotation day may vary from day to day. The student is expected to be at work from 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. most days. Attendance at evening programs may be required. The student is expected to have transportation, as travel around Illinois/Chicago is necessary. The student will interact with several Pfizer employees or health care professionals in order to complete assigned project so appropriate business attire will be required. RequirementsAttireThe student is expected to dress professionally while at the practice site or when involved in site related activities. The dress code for the practice site is business (business suit) or business casual depending on the daily schedule. The preceptor will notify the student of the appropriate attire. Confidentiality Agreement The student will sign a confidentiality agreement (“Pfizer Internship Letter”) approved by both Purdue University and Pfizer Inc’s legal advisors. EvaluationThe student will be evaluated on the following: 1. Professionalism 2. Readiness to discuss planned topics. 3. Ability to discuss and apply outcomes and pharmacoeconomic principles and/or appropriate clinical outcomes in everyday practice. 4. Identify and describe at least five healthcare segments. 5. Identify and describe at least three computer software applications that help in the management of data. 6. Ability to describe the role of disease state management in a managed care setting. 7. Completeness and presentation of project results.
