Rotation Description: Wishard Health Services is a 220 bed Trauma 1 certified, teaching hospital. The
pharmacy department provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week pharmaceutical services to hospitalized patients and
provides ambulatory pharmaceutical services through two on campus and six off campus pharmacies. The inpatient
pharmacy has decentral services with pharmacists located in the units who are available for drug information and
therapeutic drug monitoring to physicians, nurses and students.
This four week rotation allows the student to actively participate in a wide variety of clinical pharmacy administrative
activities. The student functions as an integral part of the pharmacy administrative team and is expected to complete
projects which contribute to the Pharmacy Department. The student actively participates in the activities of the
Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, the Medication Use Evaluation program, Adverse Drug Reaction reporting,
the formulary process, and day to day clinical activities of the Department. Students will work with a variety of
individuals including: Clinical Pharmacists, Inventory Pharmacist, Staff Pharmacist, Director of Pharmacy and
members of Hospital Administration. To be successful in this rotation the student must be highly motivated and
willing to work independently.
Number of hours required to be at the site: 40 hours per week for four weeks.
Student Activities:
1. Attendance at monthly meetings of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Nursing Pharmacy Committee
and other designated meetings.
2. Completion of and presentation of a drug review to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
3. Completion of a Medication Use Evaluation and present to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
4. Prepare an Adverse Drug Reaction Report.
5. Observe and review purchasing and patient billing processes.
6. Completion of other activities as assigned.
Objectives:
At the end of this rotation, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of and participate in administrative roles, activities and responsibilities of the
pharmacy department.
2. Describe the use of the organizational chart/ structure within the institution.
3. Demonstrate the understanding of and participate in pharmacy activities mandated by regulatory agencies.
4. Analyze and understand the work flow of the department.
5. Describe the purchasing and patient charge processes used within the pharmacy
6. Describe the budgetary process used within the organization.
7. Describe and/or participate in the staff development process for all employees (i.e. writing policies and
procedures, inservice presentations, committee/newsletter preparation, etc.)
8. Describe investigational drug procedures
9. Describe Controlled drug procedures
