Administration and Management Experience

The goal of the practice management experience is to gain a broad overview of the concepts and functions of pharmacy management.  Since practice management frequently involves projects, and since many management functions (budget preparation, recruitment of new pharmacy graduates, etc.) occur only once during the year, the practice management experience is fairly unstructured.  The experience is precepted by Steve Hultgren, Team Leader for network pharmacy, Bill Malloy, Clinical Coordinator for network pharmacy, and other members of the leadership team will also play an active role.  You will be involved in many activities during the rotation, working with the leadership team on vital issues of that point in time!

Regardless of specific projects during the rotation, the following goals are constant:

·         Understand the organization of a health care system and pharmacy service.

·Understand the application of information systems and technology in pharmacy practice.

·         Understand direct patient care delivery systems in multiple practice settings.

·         Understand the basics of financial management of a pharmacy service.

·         Understand clinical service management roles.

·         Understand the pharmacy’s role in preventing and reporting medication errors and adverse drug events.

·         Understand the pharmacist’s role in infection control.

·         Understand the process of managing human resources.

·         Understand steps that must be taken to ensure departmental compliance with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements (e.g., NCQA and JCAHO requirements; ASHP standards, statements, and guidelines; state and federal laws regulating pharmacy practice; and OSHA regulations).

·         Understand the pharmacy department's planning processes.

·         Understand the departmental performance improvement program.

·         Understand the appropriate relationship between the pharmacist and the pharmaceutical industry.

·         Understand the management of investigational drug products according to established protocols.

·         Contribute to the development of a new pharmacy service or to the enhancement of an existing service.  This will serve as the topic for your formal presentation.

Since Community Health Network is a 5-hospital network, with a comprehensive range of inpatient and ambulatory health care services, experience is likely to include exposure to multiple practice settings!  The rotation is fast-paced, fun, and rewarding!  For more information, please contact Steve Hultgren (355-4324, Shult@ecommunity.com ) or Bill Malloy (355-5237 , wmalloy@ecommunity.com ).
