Pharmacy Administration Community Health Network Preceptor - Dan Degnan Overview - The student will be involved with several administrative functions within the pharmacy department on a hospital and network level. This should allow the student to understand how different components of pharmacy can be integrated for the provision of quality care. Objectives 1.0 The student should meet each Monday (at a predetermined time) with the Pharmacy Facility Leader to review the upcoming week’s calendar to decide which meetings to attend. The student will review the week’s meetings with the Manager on Friday of the same week. The student should be able to discuss the “Dos and Don’ts” of meetings. The student shall attend meetings as an observer and be able to evaluate and discuss the following aspects of each meeting: 1.1 All participants and areas of responsibility 1.2 The purpose of the meeting 1.3 Evaluate how effectively the meeting was conducted 1.4 Determine if the purpose of the meeting was achieved 1.5 Discuss the relative value and effectiveness of the meeting in contrast with other methods that could have been used to achieve the same goal The following is a list of the meetings the student should attend: a. PFL Meeting b. Leadership Team Meeting c. P and T Planning Meeting c. Staff Meetings d. Pharmacy and Therapeutics e. Clinical Team Meetings f. Meetings with Drug Representatives g. Joint Operations Team Meetings h. Taskforce or Project Meetings I. Other meetings as determined by the preceptor 2.0 The student will become familiar with the organizational structure of Community Health Network. 2.1 The student shall state the responsibilities and accountabilities for each position in the organizational tree. 2.2 The student shall state strengths and weaknesses of the current organizational structure. 2.3 The student shall postulate alternative structures that could be used and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of alternatives. 3.0 The student shall become familiar with and be able to discuss current issues in the department, health-system, profession and health care. This will be completed on a weekly basis through discussion with the Leadership Team. The student will become familiar with the following journals and news media: 3.1 American Journal of Health-Systems Pharmacy 3.2 Hospitals and Health Networks 3.3 Wall Street Journal 3.4 Hospital Pharmacy 3.5 Hospital Pharmacist Report 3.6 Modern Healthcare 3.7 The Daily Briefing Newsletter 3.8 Other Online Resources 4.0 The student shall develop an understanding of the Community personnel system and be able to compare it to other human resource systems. The student should be familiar with and have the ability to discuss the following: 4.1 Sequence of steps in the hiring system for pharmacists and technicians 4.2 Interview process and techniques 4.3 Greivance process 4.4 Employee evaluation process 4.5 Federal and State laws pertaining to personnel management (including Unions) 4.6 Personnel Management vs. Personnel Leadership 4.7 Salary structures 5.0 The student shall become familiar with the following areas of administrative practice through direct exposure or discussion. 5.1 Strategic Planning (goals, objectives, process, etc) 5.2 Financial Management (Budget reports, productivity measurement systems, capital equipment/manpower needs assessment, etc.) 5.3 Technology Assement/Pharmacoeconomics 5.4 Professional Ethics 5.5 Quality Improvement Systems, Terminology and Philosophies 5.6 Personal Time Management 5.7 Professional Organization Involvement |
