Kenya International Medicine Clerkship Rotation 

Description:  An eight week focused advanced clerkship rotation where students spend one month rounding on inpatients and one month in the HIV clinic at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. 

Goals:

  1. Develop an appreciation for a multidisciplinary team approach to care.
  2. To understand pharmacodynamic differences unique to the Kenyan population, and apply these principles to therapeutic drug monitoring and problem solving.
  3. To become familiar with the pathophysiology and treatment of disease states commonly seen in the Kenyan population, and select safe, efficacious, and cost-effective, medications for their appropriate management.
  4. To understand the principles governing drug delivery and selection in an environment with limited access to medications.

Objectives:

  1. Enhance student knowledge of drug therapy
  2. Enhance student knowledge of disease states
  3. Practice drug therapy monitoring skills
  4. Practice communication skills

Student Activities:

  1. one month inpatient experience/one month HIV clinic experience
  2. Daily patient rounds
  3. Drug therapy recommendations
  4. Patient education
  5. Drug information
  6. In-service / Case discussions
  7. Reflection paper
