Union Hospital is a 330 bed community teaching hospital located in Terra Haute, Indiana. The hospital serves an eight county area in west central Indiana and east central Illinois. Union provides teaching opportunities for 'U School of Medicine, ISU School of Nursing, and a variety of allied health professions including Purdue and Butler University Pharmacy students. The hospital provides patient care in most medical specialties including radiation and medical oncology, medical and surgical cardiology, pediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, and surgical specialties. Union Hospital was recently cited as being one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States providing interventional cardiology services.  

The Pharmacy Department at Union Hospital is part of the Union Hospital Health Group which includes Union Hospital as well as the A. P.&S. Clinic and West Central Community Hospital in Clinton, IN. The main hospital pharmacy provides patient care services on a 24hr/day basis. A satellite pharmacy provides patient care functions to our 30 bed intensive care units daily from 8am to 6pm. The pharmacy is linked via computer technology to the bedside computers used by nursing allowing for access to all nurses notes, vital signs, and laboratory results for every patient. A computerized medication administration record and extensive use of Pyxis technology allow for an integrated delivery of pharmacy services. The Pharmacy Department is involved in a number of drug therapy management protocols including:  parenteral nutrition, antibiotic therapy, pain management, anticoagulation therapy. The pharmacy participates in approximately 100 such consults monthly.  

CLINICAL PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION ROTATION  

This rotation will provide the Pharm.D. candidate with an opportunity to develop or refine a facet of patient care operation provided by the department. Opportunities may include:

·                 Participation in Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee Projects
·                 Development of competency models for pharmacy practice
·                 Development of outcome/process indicators for disease state management
·                 Establishment of new clinical service
·                 Development of an ambulatory clinical pharmacy outcome monitor
·                 Participation with JCAHO standard development
·                 Participation with hospital committees involving drug therapy management

Upon completion of this rotation, the candidate will present a written report on a topic of mutual interest to the candidate and preceptor.
