Rotation Description
This four-week rotation provides exciting opportunities to gain an understanding of the challenges and demands of providing clinical services to a community hospital.   During the rotation, the student will actively participate in a wide variety of activities, function as an integral part of the pharmacy administration team, and complete projects that optimize patient outcomes.  Students will work with a variety of individuals such as the clinical pharmacy manager, clinical pharmacists,  pharmacy technicians, physicians and nurses.  Students will also encounter members of hospital administration, drug manufacturer representatives, other pharmacy students, and a variety of other individuals.  This rotation will give students a valuable insight to the many important aspects involved in the daily operation of a hospital pharmacy.   To be successful in this rotation, the student must be highly motivated and willing to work independently.

Objectives 
At the end of this rotation, the student should be able to:

1.      Demonstrate an understanding of and participate in clinical administrative roles, activities and responsibilities of the pharmacy department

  1. Describe the use of the organizational chart/ structure within the institution
  2. Demonstrate the understanding of and participate in pharmacy activities mandated by regulatory agencies
  3. Analyze and understand the workflow of the department
  4. Describe the drug review process and formulary management used within the organization
  5. Describe and/or participate in the staff development process for all employees (i.e. writing policies and procedures, in-service presentations, committee/newsletter preparation, etc.)

Activities and Responsibilities

To achieve the rotation objectives, student activities include but are not limited to:

  1. Attendance and participation in P&T committee meeting and any other meeting that the clinical manager attends
  2. Presentation of one of the various clinical topics that were addressed during the rotation
  3. Assist in the development of clinical services and pharmacy intervention programs to optimize drug therapy outcome, decrease the occurrence of adverse drug reactions, and to increase reporting of medication errors
  4. Develop staff teaching and competency programs
  5. Attend educational sessions and leadership meetings
  6. Participate in the performance improvement process
  7. Assisting inventory control through the formulary management process and protocol development.
  8. Become familiar with JCAHO requirements
