Professor Abel's research history includes development, implementation, and evaluation of progressive pharmaceutical services in organized health systems. He has extensive expertise in tracking the types and frequency of clinical services provided in different health-system practice models. Professor Abel also has experience with strategies to optimize medication use, medication safety, and ocular pharmacology.
Professor Abel’s recent research is focused in two areas. The first is use of simulation to enhance student learning. As founder and CEO of Penguin Innovations, LLC, Professor Abel and his colleagues have created an online learning platform for the preparation of parenteral medications. The Penguin Innovations virtual cleanroom currently includes a library of 68 individual medications including hazardous compounds.
The second focuses on the scholarship of engagement. Professor Abel works with faculty, college, and university administrators to facilitate the documentation and assessment of the scholarship of engagement as a means for faculty recognition and advancement.
